WOODBRIDGE, VA –  When will you start getting traffic to your website? Remember that movie Field of Dreams where Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) is walking through the corn field and he hears “If you build it, he will come!”, although some might remember it as “If you build it, they will come!” Now i’m not going to get into the big debate of He vs. They and the whole Mandela Effect debate. That’s a rabbit hole within itself.

In the movie, James Earl Jones ends up giving a great speech and says, “People will come Ray… People will most definitely come!” This was in reference to the baseball diamond built by Ray, who had to face a tough decision to either sell his farm (to include the baseball diamond) or keep it and risk losing everything.

Ray, like many entrepreneurs will have to relay on hope in order to really see if “People will most definitely come”.

Getting Traffic To Your Website Shouldn’t Be Based On Hope

That’s what I really want to talk about though…

It’s this misconception that many entrepreneurs have when it comes to building a website. I too had this misconception and it was a hard lesson to learn over the years.

When I was younger, I’d watch my favorite cartoons on Television, the commercials would come on, and I couldn’t help but notice the fine print. I noticed that more and more businesses began getting their own .com.

This really intrigued me because I was starting to really get into the internet. Even though couldn’t be on the phone while using the internet at the same time, it was always cool to see businesses advertising their .com in the commercials. All commercials weren’t like that, but it was cool to see the ones that were.

As I hopped on the internet, hoping to get a good signal, listening to the constant broadband dial up tone, I could only hope to stay connected long enough before my mom got on the phone. I visited some of the websites I remembered from watching TV and I was just so amazed at what I saw. An entire business online!

While I had no clue what the offers were all about or the phenomenon that was about to happen, I just found it pretty cool that I could watch TV and learn more about businesses simply by entering their website.

The Hard Lesson For Most Entrepreneurs

Fast forward to today and there’s still this misconception out there that all you have to do is come up with a great product or service, throw up a website on the internet, and millions of people will flock to it.

It’s a concept that has cost many entrepreneurs a lot of time, money, blood, sweat, and tears… Staying up late at night wondering why nobody is coming to their website. Constantly making changes and trying to figure out why the old adage they’ve heard for years was the exact opposite, “If you build it, they WON’T come!”

It was a hard lesson I learned years ago and the conclusion I came to was quite simple. I finally figured out why.

When it comes to getting people to come to your website, there is an equation that is simple as 1+1=2.

Of course, part of that equation is building it… You must build or have a website built for your business. Also, the web site should be high quality and amazing. Yes, it’s true… Even if you have an ugly website, people will still flock to it, but that’s only if you have the full equation in play. Not only that, but it’s much more challenging if your website isn’t top notch. However, it can still be done. So at the very least, you need to have a presence online.

Sadly, the other part of the equation is often ignored, dismissed, disregarded, or downplayed… Whatever word you want to use is fine. Just know that by missing this major part of the equation, you are practically guaranteeing that, “They WON’t come”. By “they” I mean your customers, clients, members, etc.

Ok, enough of the mystery… What is the other part of the equation? You ready?

It’s called, MARKETING!

Marketing is the lifeblood of any business. For the most part, it doesn’t matter how great your product or service is. If nobody knows about it, then they aren’t going to come to your website. It’s the same if you have a brick and mortar store. If nobody knows what you have to offer and how to find you, then you can forget about it. In the mean time, you’ll continue paying on that lease, stressing about whether to sell your business, and when that happens… it’s over! Onto the next venture, or finished with the entrepreneurial lifestyle all together.
